Exam Day Expectations

What to Expect on ARE 5.0 Exam Day

Arriving at the Test Center

Get an early start on exam day and arrive at the test center at least 30 minutes before the scheduled test time. Starting early enables you to remain in control and maintain confidence before your exam.

If you arrive more than 30 minutes late, you may lose your appointment and forfeit the testing fee. You will be asked to provide picture identification with a signature and a second form of identification. For security reasons, you may also have your picture taken.

The Exam Room

Exam room conditions vary considerably. Some rooms have comfortable seats, adequate lighting and ventilation, error-free computers, and a minimum of distractions. The conditions of other rooms, however, leave much to be desired. Unfortunately, there is little a candidate can do about this, unless, of course, the computer malfunctions. Staff members will try to rectify any problems within their control.

Once the candidate is seated at an assigned workstation and the test begins, the candidate must remain seated, except when authorized to leave by test center staff. When the first set of vignettes is completed, or time runs out, there is a mandatory break, during which you must leave the exam room. Photo identification will be required when you reenter the exam room for the next set of vignettes. At the conclusion of the test, staff members will collect all used scratch paper.

Exam Room Conduct

Make sure you're aware of the conduct rules within the test center. NCARB has provided a lengthy list of offensive activities that may result in dismissal from a test center. Such conduct includes:

  • giving or receiving help on the test
  • using prohibited aids, such as reference material
  • failing to follow instructions of the test administrator
  • creating a disturbance
  • removing notes or scratch paper from the exam room
  • tampering with a computer
  • taking the test for someone else
